Richard the Lionheart, also known as Richard I of England, was King of England from 1189 until his death in 1199. He was known for his military leadership and bravery in battle, particularly during the Third Crusade.
During his reign, Richard was also involved in conflicts with France, and he spent much of his time away from England on military campaigns. He was captured by the Holy Roman Emperor on his way back from the Crusade and held for ransom, which led to a financial strain on England.
Richard was succeeded by his brother, John, who was not as successful as a military leader or a ruler, and is known for his infamous reign and the signing of the Magna Carta. Despite this, Richard is still remembered as a legendary warrior and an important figure in English history.
