Free Fire is an online-playable action-adventure battle royale game played in a third-person perspective.

The game consists of up to 50 players falling from a parachute onto an island in search of weapons and equipment to kill the other players. Players are free to choose their starting location, and take weapons and supplies to extend their battle life.

When players join a game, they will enter a plane that will fly over the island. While the plane is flying over the island, players can hop where they want, allowing them to choose a strategic place to land, away from enemies. After landing, players must scavenge for utilitarian weapons and gadgets. Medical equipment, medium and large weapons, grenades and other premium items can be found all over the island. The ultimate goal for players is to survive on the island with a maximum of 50-51 players online; This requires eliminating all opponents players encounter along the way and ensuring that they are the only survivor left. The available safe area of the game map shrinks over time, directing surviving players into tighter areas to force encounters. The last player or team standing wins the round.

The graphics have been described as 'good for mid to low end phones', but one reviewer stated that 'if games with good graphics are your thing then it is not recommended to play Free Fire under 12 years of age. But if one likes Battle royale games over 16 years old, you should definitely play.

T Carvalho of Tech Tido commented that Free Fire 'prioritizes performance, making it a great choice for any type of device. The gameplay stands out and has enough content to entertain and offer rewarding combat.' Regarding the development of characters and skills, she said it was a 'flashy addition'. 

In Google Play's annual list of ‘Best Apps of the Year', Free Fire won the 'Best Popular Voted Game' category for 2019, being the most voted in Brazil and Thailand. 

Free Fire is one of the most popular battle royale games for mobile, behind PUBG Mobile, Fortnite Battle Royale, and Call of Duty: Mobile. It is especially popular in Latin America, India and Southeast Asia. Free Fire was the fourth most downloaded game on the Google Play Store in the last quarter of 2018,  and was the fourth most downloaded game worldwide in 2018 on iOS and the Google Play Store combined. The title garnered approximately 182 million downloads in 2018, making it the second most downloaded mobile battle royale game (higher than Fortnite and behind only PUBG Mobile),  and generated approximately $19.3 in revenue. $1 million in monthly revenue through December 2018, becoming a huge financial success for Garena.  As of February 2020, Free Fire has 500 million downloads on the Google Play Store. 

At the end of the first quarter of 2021, Free Fire surpassed PUBG Mobile's revenue in the US, generating $100 million in sales compared to $68 million for PUBG Mobile. Free Fire's revenue jumped 4.5 times compared to the same period in the previous year.
